The Government has said that it will not pay bills for individuals who chose to quarantine in private hotels since they declined to stay in government-designated facilities.

This announcement follows an uproar from the public that the Government had refused to pay the bills for individuals in private hotels even after taking them for mandatory quarantine.

According to the Government spokesperson, Colonel Retired Cyrus Oguna, everyone was given an option of staying at Government-owned facilities but some decided to quarantine in private hotels.

“Individuals who chose government-owned quarantine facilities were moved to such facilities,” Oguna said.

During the weekend, about 42 individuals were kicked out of Pride Inn Hotel over unpaid dues. The individuals said they were making arrangements with the Government to settle the dues.

The individuals were staying at the hotel for 14 days but were forced to stay for an additional 14 days to ascertain that they were negative for the Covid-19.

The Government also saw it necessary to add the 14 days after some individuals at the facilities turned out positive where Oguna says it was as a result of not observing the social distancing rule.

“The additional quarantine period was necessary to protect the rest of the society from the disease,” Oguna said.

So far, Kenya has 197 confirmed cases with 8 deaths and 25 recoveries.

Six new cases were reported on Sunday, April 12, 2020. Of the six patients, five were male while one was a female.

Five of the patients who tested positive were Kenyans while one was a foreign individual with their ages ranging between 29 and 59.

One Covid-19 patient succumbed to the virus in Siaya County, bringing the total deaths to eight.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the ministry is currently tracing 500 individuals who might have come into contact with the reported victims. Kenya has so far tested 7,449 samples since March 12, 2020.

Globally, the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases is 1,854,174 with the death toll hitting over 114,000 and the number of recoveries being 427,896.
