Poor Families Set To Receive Money From The Government Via M-Pesa

The Government of Kenya has said that it has proper information on poor families in Kenya and it will use it to send any form of help to them directly.

According to the government, the involvement of Cartels or intermediaries will not be required to help the needy as they are costly and time-consuming.

Speaking to the members of the press on Friday, April,17,2020, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya said brokers have taken advantage of such programs to exploit vulnerable families in Kenya.

CS Munya said some agencies that had been entrusted with the Government to distribute food and funds have ended up pocketing up to 50 percent, leaving the poor families to suffer.

“In the process, the government ended up losing a lot of money as the poor families continued suffering,” said CS Munya.

“The government has decided that individuals will be given money to buy food or any other provisions they need.”

The Government, however, did not reveal the amount each household or individual would receive.

The move will see a good number of Kenyans cushioned during the Covid-19 crisis since most of them have been left jobless following the outbreak of the pandemic.

Most Kenyans are having trouble adapting to the current situation because they were living on hand to mouth, some have been laid off while some have been forced to go for mandatory leaves without receiving any pay.

Some experts had reported that since there is the slow movement of cargo at the ports and also due to the locust invasion, Kenya is likely to have a food shortage.

However, CS Munya assured Kenyans that there is enough food in the stores, dismissing reports that have been circulating about the food shortage in the country.
