The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has today surpassed the thousand mark after 66 people have tested positive in the last 24 hours with Eastleigh and OldTown being locked down further.

66 is the highest number announced of COVID-19 confirmed cases with Health CS Mutahi Kagwe noting 64 of today’s cases are of Kenyans and two are foreigners.

The 66 COVID-19 cases confirmed in the last 24 hours are spread out as follows:

Mombasa  – 30

Nairobi  – 26

Kajiado  – 3

Busia -1

Kisii -1

Uasin Gishu -1

Nakuru -1

Kirinyaga -1

Makueni  -1

Meru -1

The government has also extended the partial lockdown in Eastleigh in Nairobi and Old Town in Mombasa with Health CS Mutahi Kagwe saying there still is a need to contain the two areas.

The cessation of movement in Eastleigh and Old Town has since been extended to 6th of June 2020 with restaurants and malls in the areas to remain shut.

“The restaurants and malls are to remain closed until then,” Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has said during today’s, 20th May 2020, briefing. Eastleigh and Old Town have been on Lockdown since the 6th of May when COVID-19 cases increased in the areas.

The two other highest COVID-19 cases announced since the outbreak in Kenya are 51 and 57 in a span of 24 hours.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has said that the residents are allowed to walk within the area, adding that they are not locked in their houses.

Kenya has not registered any fatalities to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours and the number of fatalities hence still is 50.

Out of the 50 deaths that Kenya has recorded, 15, which is 30 percent, occurred in homes which CS Mutahi Kagwe has blamed for higher infection and death rate in Mombasa as it hinders contact tracing.
