Eastleigh Should Be Locked Down To Spare Kenyan Lives, This Is Why

Eastleigh is common and known as a shopping destination for new clothes from Somalia, China among other countries but currently, it is Kenya’s leading hotspot for COVID-19 cases.

Eastleigh is likely to become the center of the spread of COVID-19 in Nairobi as it is an area that is not only congested but is also now with the highest rate of spread of COVID-19 and despite this, you will easily notice people in the area spitting all over the place.

Currently, with 63 total cases of COVID-19, Eastleigh is a shopping hub for most Kenyans currently buying food in bulk as there exists a notion that things are cheaper in the area.

With the current Mtumba ban still in existence and a cropping fear that second-hand clothes might be risky as they are coming from countries with high COVID-19 fatality cases, Kenyans who depended on buying clothes for re-sale are now going for clothes in Eastleigh and re-selling them online.

Eastleigh’s predicament began when an Imam tested positive for COVID-19 and yet continued praying in mosques and visiting different houses until he died last month, 16th April 2020.

“This was a reckless and irresponsible act by the Imam,” Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe spoke of the same Eastleigh that registered 29 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, 5th May 2020 raising the areas total number to 63.

The rise in COVID-19 positive numbers in Eastleigh was recorded after area residents turned up in large numbers for free targeted mass testing according to the Ministry of Health acting director-general Patrick Amoth said.

Eastleigh residents continue to operate in full disregard of the crisis that faces the area making it a danger to those touring the area and surrounding areas in Nairobi despite the area Business Community secretary general Omar Hussein announcing the closure of businesses.

The majority of shoppers and businesses in Eastleigh are instead making a mockery of the requirement to social distancing and wear masks.

The number of positive cases in the country as of yesterday was 535 after the Ministry of Health confirmed 45 new cases on 5th May 2020 out of 25,869 total tests carried out since the country reported the first case on 13th March 2020 with Kawangware 24 and Mombasa Old Town 39 ranking with the second-highest number of cases.
