Kenya Marks Highest Ever Number Of COVID-19 Cases In 24 Hours

It is a worrying 57 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours in Kenya according to an update on the country’s status on the virus given today, 17th May 2020.

The confirmed number of COVID-19 cases has since jumped to 887 according to the press briefing delivered today by Government Spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna who said 2,198 samples had been tested in the last 24 hours.

The 57 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kenya is the highest single-day Covid-19 infections recorded so far in the country with the distribution of the cases by counties is as follows:

Mombasa -35

Nairobi -17

Kajiado- 3

Kwale -1

Kitui -1

“Thirty-four of the positive cases are males, and 23 are females. The youngest of the cases is two years old while the oldest is 61 years. Cumulatively, we have so far tested 43,712 samples,” the statement by Spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna said.

In Mombasa, the 35 COVID-19 cases are distributed in the following estates:

Mvita- 22

Likoni -4

Changamwe -3

Nyali -3

Kisauni -2

Jomvu -1

In Nairobi, the 17 COVID-19 cases are distributed in the following estates:

Kibra -9

Mandatory quarantine Centre -2

Eastleigh- 2

Aga Khan Hospital- 1

Kamulu -1

Dandora-1

Pangani -1

Kwale county has one case of COVID-19 in Msambweni while Kitui county has one case in Mwingi Town, while Kajiado county has three cases that are spread out with two from Kajiado central and one from Kajiado North.

The statement by Spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna has also revealed that there are 12 more Tanzanians who are truck drivers and have tested positive for COVID-19.

The twelve truck drivers according to the Spokesperson Col. Cyrus Oguna include 11 of those who have tested positive for COVID-19 at Lunga Lunga Border and one at Taveta Border and who have all since been made to return to their country.

On a positive note, 12 patients have been discharged from hospital, bringing the total number of people who have so far recovered from coronavirus to 313, while there has been no death and so those that have succumbed to the disease remain 50.
