Magufuli Set To Reopen Schools, Stops Quarantine Of Tourists Amid Covid-19 Uncertainty

They say when the gods want to kill you, they first make you mad. President John Pombe Magufuli of Tanzania seems to be a destructive path of the gods in the face of the fast-spreading pandemic.

In yet another controversial announcement, President Magufuli, who attended a church service full of congregants without masks on, he announced that he will reopen schools and colleges in the next one week.

According to Magufuli, cases of Covid-19 in Tanzania have “dropped” drastically adding that he was also going to reopen sporting activities across Tanzania saying the activities are meant to “entertain Tanzanians.”

According to Magufuli, God has heard the prayers of Tanzanians and that He is healing them of Covid-19. He called on Tanzanians to continue attending church service and praying against the devil, which is Covid-19.

Ironically, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Tanzania are not known. The last time a brief on the numbers was given was in April. Magufuli then put a stop in the briefs and threatened to jail anyone who dared reveal the numbers.

The United States Embassy in Tanzania raised concerns over failure by the government to release Covid-19 figures to the people saying the numbers of infections might be higher than the rest of the world can imagine.

Following the announcement by President Uhuru Kenyatta to close the border between Kenya and Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli has retaliated by denying entry of any truck or goods from Kenya into Tanzania.

On Monday, the Ministry of Health in Kenya said that more than 50 truck drivers from Tanzania tested positive of Covid-19 and were denied entry into Kenya. Magufuli says there is no way a driver can drive all the way from Far es Salaam to Namanga with Covid-19 without dropping dead.

Kenyan authorities are yet to give a statement on Magufuli’s decision to totally close the border.
