Governments have different ways of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic but Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has been very cautious in handling it, and surely, it has worked well for his country.

In a new move, Museveni has directed the Ugandan Ministry of health to send back all truck drivers who test positive to their countries to reduce the burden on his country.

Following the directive, Uganda sent back up to 124 truck drivers to their respective countries, which cut the number of reported cases in Uganda by almost half.

By Wednesday, the World Health Organization had reported that Uganda had 260 confirmed cases but the numbers nosedived to 145 cases after drivers from foreign countries were sent back.

“Following a Presidential Directive of deducting all foreign truck drivers from Uganda’s total confirmed case count, the confirmed COVID-19 cases now stand at 145,” said Uganda’s health minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng.

However, the repatriation of positive people is against the WHO’s guidelines in dealing with the virus as it puts the health of others (those living in other countries) at risk.

Uganda is among the East African Countries that have reported at least a manageable level.

Globally, the numbers have passed the 5 million mark with the death toll reaching 334,698 by Thursday, May, 21, 2020.

According to the World Health Organization, there has been laxity among nations around the world which has led to an increased number of cases globally.

The WHO said it was concerned about the rapid rise in the number of cases in Low-income countries with projections showing that Brazil could be the new hotspot of the virus. Brazil cases surpassed UK’s making it the third most affected country.

“We’re very concerned about the rising numbers of cases in low and middle-income countries.”

On a positive end, 2,085,024 have so far recovered from the virus.
