President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced 31 new Covid-19 cases recorded in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 1,192 as the pandemic continues to sweep across the country.

The Head of State released the new figures on Saturday at State House, Nairobi saying that so far, the government has tested 57,640 samples. So far, the number of fatalities remains at 50.

Uhuru’s announcement comes at a time numbers of confirmed cases have been spiraling with the Ministry of Health projecting that between the month of August and September, Kenyans are likely to see at least 200 positive cases reported on a daily basis.

“Coronavirus will undermine our efforts to revitalize the economy,” said the President during the release of the new cases. The Kenyan economy has been hit hard by the pandemic, forcing businesses to shut down and people losing their jobs.

The government has moved to secure a loan of 106 billion shillings from the World Bank and another of 79 billion shillings from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help stabilize the economy.

The government is also thinking of opening up the country for business even as the numbers continue to rise. “I have told my Cabinet Secretaries that we cannot stay in lockdown forever. But if we open up the country by lifting the restrictions and then the virus continues to spread, it will be our fault for not taking the precautions outlined,” he said.
