80,000 Vulnerable Households To Receive Ksh 606 Million From EU

The European Union in partnership with other non-profitable organizations is planning to donate 606 million shillings to 80,000 vulnerable Kenyans.

EU said the 606 million shillings will benefit most Kenyans who lost their income sources due to the Covid-19 pandemic and those that are living in informal settlements where the virus is spreading faster.

The grant targets mostly residents of Nairobi’s informal settlements including, Korogocho, Mathare, Soweto, Majengo, Gitare, Maringo, Gatina Lunga Lunga, Kayole and Mukuru.20,000 Kenyans from these areas are expected to benefit from the program.

.“The EU is standing with Kenya during this difficult time, providing a lifeline through cash transfers for the worst affected people in Nairobi’s urban informal settlements, including women, the elderly and persons with disabilities, ” said EU Ambassador to Kenya Simon Mordue.

EU says that about 30 percent of residents in Kenya’s informal settlements areas experience severe hunger during the Covid-19 pandemic and the new program of cash transfers will help provide food security in the most affected areas.

The vulnerable families are likely to lack essential needs including food and other necessary House of items like soap, water, face masks and according to the EU, the residents will be receiving cash transfers from June for three months from June.

The EU Mobilized other firms to participate in the program with Kenya Red Cross, Oxfam, IMPACT, the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness, ACTED, Wangu Kanja, and Concern Worldwide all joining forces to support the vulnerable Kenyans.

“By mobilizing resources quickly, the European Union has shown its commitment to working in partnership with the people of Kenya, government authorities, civil society, and affected communities. This whole of society approach will save lives, ” said Mat Cousins, Oxfam Kenya Humanitarian Director.

Currently, Vulnerable households in Kenya are receiving support through the Inua Jamii Program by the Ministry of Labour.
