It is already 3 months since Kenya reported it’s the first case of COVID 19, businesses took a hit in the first month and some sent their employees on unpaid leave which forces people to start looking at cutting costs and reconsidering more affordable rented spaces.

Each day calls for tougher measures of salary reduction and layoffs for families and the government too. Reductions in income for employees who live on rental properties means reducing expenses and if having to move to smaller spaces, then here is a write-up to help make that space look bigger than it actually is.

The first and one of the largest expenses is the rental cost. As such moving to the smaller houses becomes a necessity to cushion reduced income. Even with emergency 3 months, expense savings soon run out but bills remain. Doing away with non-essential expenses is part of the plan.

As people move from lavish living and spaces to reduced space, it is imperative to make the room look large for comfort. Below are some effective ways to play with small spaces and make them look big.

Furniture arrangement

Furniture arrangement in living room and bedrooms is key.  The most natural thing to do is to push furniture against the wall and leave space in the middle. Unfortunately, this works negatively to reading the space in the room. The best option is to pull the furniture at least 1 foot or 300cm from the wall thus creating more visual space.

Use of mirrors

Large mirrors on the wall create an illusion of space behind the wall making the room look bigger or twice as big. They also help in reflecting light into the room. The position of the mirror is key as it reflects views mirrored. This works well in bathrooms, washrooms, and bedrooms too. While in the living room, a well-placed mirror will reflect the views in its direct line of sights such as artwork or plant.

Artwork

An Artwork is a key center of attention in any space and as such there placement is key in the room. Artwork should always be at eye level. However, with different height of eye level for each person, being too high or too low when making the room look bad.  The most appropriated position is to have the artwork center at between 150cm and 165cm from the floor

Window and door curtains

By moving the curtain rod higher to the ceiling makes the wall look taller thus the perception of more space. One can also make the rod longer than the window or door thus giving the impression of a larger window. This trick also allows the curtain to be off the window when pulled to let in more light.

Lighting

Well-lit rooms create the impression of large space as dark spaces shrink the room. Interrogation room meant to be dim to feel squeezed in as opposed to the lounge, which needs much light. Moreover, moving table lamps to dark corners to cancel shadows will lit up the room and make it look larger

Neat spaces

By keeping things in the cabinet and shelves, one avoiding things laying around makes space looks larger. Proper use of cabinet and storage is important to avoid clutter and get things from storage when you need them.
