ECP Intimidating Those Trying To Expose Its Rot Through Threats And Bribes

BY Juma · June 23, 2020 02:06 pm

Trying to fight corruption in any part of the world is not a simple task. It is a risky and treacherous venture that needs a strong will of not giving up, always holding on despite the end being just not far away from the horizon.

Former Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga once said that countries such as Kenya are run by cartels. He said the cartels are so powerful that if one dares stand on their way, they either send them into exile or six-feet-under.

Many people have ended up losing everything, including their lives for trying to fight corruption. Some have even ended up in jail for standing for what is just. But what should we do? Should we stop fighting corruption and let the cartels win?

For three months now, our team has been unearthing the rot behind the collapse of the once vibrant construction company, Spencon. For the three months, it came to the surface that Spencon did not die a natural death. It was murdered.

We discovered that Emerging Capital Partners (ECP) are behind the collapse of Spencon. Calling out ECP for who they are, has not been easy. Our team has been facing numerous challenges including having to always be on the lookout whenever on the move.

Our first month of exposing ECP saw Twitter accounts belonging to our senior analysts such as @SokoAnalyst and @jumaf3 being targeted by bots. Numerous reports were made to Twitter to have the accounts suspended.

Eventually, on April 27, 2020, the @jumaf3 account that had over 110,000 followers was suspended. Insiders say that at least 10 people were hired and paid 50,000 shillings, with a down payment of 35,000 shillings to ensure that the two accounts disappear. They succeeded to bring down one.

Members of our team have been receiving calls from a person identified by Truecaller as The Boss. The person has been insisting on meeting members of our team, including offering to offer money so that we can kill any story that is related to the fall of Spencon. We said no. Some members have been told to keep off any stories related to Spencon.

The calls and the intimidations show that ECP knows that its activities that led to the collapse of Spencon are questionable. We shall not relent in calling them out. Thousands of Kenyans who used to work at Spencon were left jobless. Some died of the shock. Families were broken. Children dropped out of school. Life has never been the same for the majority of them. We are not going to betray them for 30 coins of silver.

ECP has engaged in a systematic violation of all rules and regulations that govern the doing of business in most of the East African Countries and used Spencon as a conduit to carry out their dirty work.

We have evidence that bribes have been paid to government officials in Uganda, with a strong likelihood of similar payments in other countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, and Rwanda. Most of the bribes by ECP were paid between the years 2014 and 2015.

It is estimated that in the year 2014 alone, more than two million dollars in bribes were paid in Uganda with a similar amount being made in the year 2015.

For years, even though bribery was customary in the East African Region and was often required by officials, the custom was condemned in Spencon. Former employees we interviewed said before the coming of ECP, Spencon would rather lose a tender than pay a bribe to a government official.

When they took control of Spencon, ECP not only re-introduced the practice but made bribe payments of unprecedented amounts without giving a damn of the consequences or how that would paint them.

It is estimated that since taking over Spencon, ECP paid bribes amounting to 30 percent of all monies received from the projects done in Uganda.

We should all stand against corruption.
