Kenya finally scooped a seat as a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council on Thursday after beating Djibouti.

But just what are the functions of the UN Security Council?

The UN Security Council is mandated to maintain international peace and security with the principles and purpose of the United Nations.

The UN Security Council has the power to investigate any dispute or situation that might lead to international friction.

After investigating a dispute or a situation, the UN Security Council is mandated to recommend methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of the settlement.

The UN Security Council has powers to formulate plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armament.

It determines the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression and to recommend what action to be taken.

It has powers to call on members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to stop or prevent aggression.

The UN Security Council has powers to recommend a military action against an aggressor. It also recommends the admission of new members to the UN.

It exercises the trusteeship function of the United Nations in “strategic areas.”

It recommends to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General, and, together with the Assembly, elect judges to the International Court of Justice.

Currently, African countries are pushing to have a permanent slot at the UN something that permanent members such as the United and the United States of America do not want to hear of.
