BY Juma · July 23, 2020 02:07 pm

International passengers arriving at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) will not be restricted by the night curfew and will be allowed to move freely.

President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the night curfew that starts at 9 pm and ends at 4 am daily in an effort to curb on the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

The Ministry of Transport says the exemption of international passengers from the curfew will enable airlines to operate smoothly without being hindered by the curfew.

“International passengers will be exempted from restrictions on movement past curfew hours when the international flights resume,” the Ministry of Transport said in a statement.

On July 6, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta opened up the economy by lifting the cessation of movement in and out of the counties of Nairobi, Mombasa, and Mandera. The President also allowed local air transport to kick off on July 15, 2020. The President also ordered the resumption of international air travel on August 1, 2020.

Tourists and passengers arriving in the country from August will not be quarantined as had already been directed. According to the Cabinet Secretary of TransporMr. James Macharia, quarantining visitors will be bad for business.

“All passengers shall be exempted from quarantine on arrival at their destinations if their body temperatures are not above 37.5 degrees Celsius and they do not have a persistent cough, difficulty in breathing and other flu-like symptoms,” Mr. Macharia said.

Covid-19 cases have continued to rise in the country ever since the lifting of the cessation of movement. President Uhuru Kenyatta has convened a special sitting with county government officials on Monday to discuss the surge in the Covid-19 cases in the country.

It is expected that the Head of State is set to announce more restrictions after the meeting. Governors have been threatening to lockdown their counties if the cases will continue to rise.
