BY Juma · July 21, 2020 09:07 am

Kenya Power and Lighting Company has appointed five new non-executive directors, few days after have of the board resigned in what was viewed as a push from State House.

The resignation of the board paved way for the appointment of the new one to take the helm of the monopolistic company that still makes massive losses.

Those appointed are Eng. Abdulrazaq Ali, Eng. Elizabeth Rogo, Caroline Kitony Waiyaki, Ms. Vivienne Yeta, and Mr. Sachen Gudka.

The team is expected to turn around Kenya Power that has been rocked with a series of scandals accompanied with so many complaints from Kenyans.

Sweeping KPLC

It is said that President Uhuru Kenyatta forced the previous board to tender their resignation after it emerged that the company was sinking with little help to salvage it from those in charge.

Kenya Power is the only power distributor in Kenya that has no competitor and sets its own prices. Interestingly, it has been registering massive losses despite having the monopoly of the market.

According to sources, President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to give the new board an ultimatum with clear deliverables that are to be delivered with set timelines. Will Kenyans start seeing quality services from Kenya Power?

Corruption at Kenya Power

Allegations of corruption have hit Kenya Power in recent years, forcing some of the top managers to be shown the door. Some of the allegations include illegal awarding of transformer tenders with faulty ones being delivered leading to loss of billions of shillings.

Employees at the company have also been accused of colluding with cartels in the sector to manipulate power bills to steal both from Kenyans and from the company.

It was discovered that some employees had formed their own Paybills diverting company payments to their own accounts. The company now says it has upgraded its systems for better service delivery.
