Yahoo Engineer Who Hacked Over 6,000 Mails In Search Of Porn Charged

A former Yahoo engineer, Reyes Daniel Ruiz, 34-years of age, was on the 6^th of July 2020 sentenced to limited house arrest and probation after violating the privacy of thousands of Yahoo users in search of explicit images from their mails.

Reyes Daniel Ruiz, the Yahoo Engineer, was charged with an illegal sifting of user data in search of private sexual images and videos, an act he was able to engage in thanks to his position.

Reyes Daniel Ruiz was charged for sifting through Yahoo users’ mail in search of porn material between 2009 and 2019 and is estimated to have obtained two terabytes of personal images and video footage, between 1,000 and 4,000 stolen files.

Reyes Daniel Ruiz as evidenced in the court proceedings targeted “young women,” who sent their naked images using the Yahoo mail with some of his victims ranging from co-workers, family members to total strangers.

The Yahoo engineer who is now in house arrest is reported to using the Yahoo mails he hacked to access services like iCloud, Facebook, Gmail, and DropBox.

“Ruiz cracked user passwords, and accessed internal Yahoo systems to compromise the Yahoo accounts,” the statement said. “He made copies of images and videos that he found in the personal accounts without permission, and stored the data at his home.”

Reyes Daniel Ruiz had also been charged with destroying evidence contained in a hard drive which had details to more of the hacked Yahoo accounts and the detectives only recovered evidence proving he had hacked 6,000 accounts.

Reyes Daniel pled guilty to the charges and even cooperated with the authorities arguing he only kept the images for his own personal use and he had no intention to disseminate.

Reyes Daniel Ruiz is now in house arrest with exceptions offered allowing him to leave for work, religious activities, medical appointments, or attend court.
