Kilimambogo Highway Building and Technology College in Yatta Sub-county in Machakos was closed by the Covid-19 response team on grounds that it flouted the government’s coronavirus directives.

Area Assistant County Commissioner and head of the COVID-19 response team Joseph Mukururi said the private college had allegedly opened on August 15 against the State’s directive that colleges open on January 2021.

According to Mr. Mukururi, the institute had 61 students and 9 workers at the time of closure who were all ordered to go home until further notice.

“We have closed the college for flouting government policy on opening learning institutions and investigations are ongoing to establish why the college was opened at all while others across the country remain closed. The management has been endangering the lives of students, tutors, and neighbors around the college and we cannot allow it,” Mukururi said.

Area Assistant County Commissioner Joseph Mukururi went ahead and warned other institutes in the sub-county who intend defy the government’s directives and open, they will be arrested and prosecuted.

Previously, education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha spoke to the National Assembly Education Committee and said that the planned January reopening of primary and secondary schools may have to be pushed further.

According to Prof. George Magoha, the decision to allow learners back to class is largely dependent on the covid-19 curve in the country and according to stats, the curve is not flattening at all.

As on Sunday, August 23rd, the Ministry of Health (MoH) announced 246 more COVID-19 cases in the country following testing of 4,179 samples in the past 24 hours.

The new COVID-19 cases pushed Kenya’s cumulative number of positive cases to 32,364 from 32,118 reported on Saturday, August 22, according to MOH.

The country’s number of recoveries stand at 18,670 after 217 more people recovered from the virus and six other patients succumbing to it.
