Tuskys Supermarket located at United Mall in Kisumu has suffered another blow after the auctioneer closed its door over rent arrears worth millions.

The retail shop owes the landlord Sh26 million according to an auctioneer familiar with the matter. Other small shops which are sublet by Tuskys have also been affected.

Auctioneers from Victoria Blue Service s descended on the retail chain locking all three entrances.

Tuskys Supermarket is said to have been owing to the landlord accrued rent of 32 million shillings but had so far only settled 6 million shillings.

Workers were stranded as Victoria Blues Services Auctioneers locked the Tuskys and sublet shops following a public auction in a local daily.

It is set to auction the property in the next eight days if the Tuskys management will not have settled the debt

In the public auction, the auctioneers have been given a directive to sell all the goods in the shops to recover the money.

The supermarket had also leased out several spaces within the building to individual businesses including Good Life pharmacy, Safari Optica, Tuscom, Ufungamano Christian Bookshop, and Gifts all of which have been shut down as they were reportedly paying rent directly to the management.

Tuskys United manager Wilson Kanyi declined to comment on the matter and instead referred the journalist to the head office in Nairobi.

On Thursday, the auctioneers also towed a lorry canter belonging to Tuskys Supermarket.
