Expect Heavy Rainfall And Floods From Sunday

The Kenya Meteorological Department (MET) has warned that several parts of the country are likely to experience higher rainfall from November 8th to November 10th which could lead to flooding and landslides in some parts of the country.

In an advisory released on Thursday, the MET said that the ongoing rains will continue with a livelihood of the rain intensifying to more than 30 mm in the South Western part of Kenya, Nairobi, Eastern, and the Coastal region.

A forecast of the rainfall situation by the weatherman indicates that the counties which will be affected are Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang’a, Embu, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Taita Taveta, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Baringo, Narok, Migori and Nandi.

Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Uasin Gishu, Vihiga, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Busia, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, Kajiado, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Parts of Tana River and Lamu are also among the counties that will be affected.

According to MET, flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily especially downstream. Residents living in the mention areas have been asked to be on the lookout for floods, water levels in rivers and lakes.

The department, in a statement, called for measures to be put in place to avoid loss of life and property during the expected landslides and flooding.

They also urged people living in landslide-prone areas to be on the lookout for the crack in the ground and take the necessary measures to safeguard their lives and property.

Motorists are also advised to avoid driving through moving waters with people being told to avoid walking in moving water or open fields. They should also not shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.

Those living in the coastal towns have been warned of poor visibility while those living in landslide-prone areas have been asked to be watchful. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the rains will reduce in intensity on Tuesday, November 10th.
