Global Covid-19 Cases Surpass 57 Million As Italy Records 28,337 Cases In A Day

Italy’s Minister for Health said on Sunday that the country registered 28,337 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, from 34,767 recorded the day before.

The Ministry of Health also reported 562 COVID 19-related deaths, down from 692 on Saturday and 699 on Friday. The country carried out 188,747 COVID-19 swabs in the past day, against a previous 237,225.

Italy in general has recorded 49,823 COVID-19 fatalities since its outbreak emerged in February, the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain’s. The country has also registered a total of 1.409 million cases.

According to Italy’s MOH, The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 stood at 34,279 on Sunday, a rise of 216 from the day before. That compared with a daily increase of 106 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, According to the Johns Hopkins University, the overall number of global COVID-19 cases has surpassed the 57 million mark, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.36 million.

The Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 58,704,217 and 1,388,926 on Saturday respectively.

The global number of COVID-19 recoveries stands at 37,518,592 according to the World Health Organization.

The data presents the US as the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 11,908,395 and 254,383, respectively, according to the CSSE.

Next in line is India with over 9,004,365 COVID-19 cases, the country’s death toll as of now stands at over 132,162.

The other countries with more than a million confirmed cases are Brazil (6,020,164), France (2,160,343), Russia (2,023,025), Spain (1,556,730), the UK (1,477,214), Argentina (1,359,042), Italy (1,345,767), Colombia (1,233,444) and Mexico (1,025,969), the CSSE figures showed.

The University’s data also indicated that Brazil currently accounts for the second-highest number of fatalities at 168,613.

The countries with a death toll above 20,000 are Mexico (100,823), the UK (54,381), Italy (48,569), France (48,341), Iran (43,896), Spain (42,619), Argentina (36,790), Peru (35,446), Russia (34,980), Colombia (34,929) and South Africa (20,759).

Additionally, a Reutter’s tally showed that total COVID-19 cases in Africa surpassed the 2,000,000 marks despite the slow addition of reported infections compared to other regions around the world.

According to the tally, Africa represents under 4% of the world’s reported cases, which are over 2,012,000 and many experts believe the number is an undercount.

South Africa has the continent’s highest number of reported COVID-19 cases standing at over 750,000, with a death rate of 2.71%, based on a Reuters tally.

Other countries such as Sudan, Chad, and Egypt have reported the highest fatality rates across the continent at 7.81%, 6.28%, and 5.82%, respectively.
