Nairobi Metropolitan To Impose Ksh 200,000 Fine For Littering

Nairobi residents and firms who dump garbage illegally will be charged 200,000 shillings after the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) clarified orders given to police who were tasked to implement punitive measures.

According to the notice issued by NMS in November 2020, detailed that a team will enforce measures that are stipulated in the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act 2015 section 36.

Any person who dumps or allows waste in any premise, land, or any other place not approved for such disposal is liable to a fine not exceeding 200,000 shillings according to the law. It adds that the default penalty is imprisonment not exceeding two years or both.

In a notice, Nairobi Metropolitan Services stated that every household, business, and individuals should be responsible for the waste they generate.

This development came days after NMS sought the aid of the Nairobi Police Service in dealing with what it termed as deliberate littering of city estates.

The deep-rooted rivalry between Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director General Major General Mohammed Badi has now taken another twist.

In what could further deteriorate the worsening relationship between Governor Mike Sonko and NMS boss Mohamed Badi, each of the two institutions claims the control of the Inspectorate department.

The Sonko team accuses the NMS of forcefully taking over more than 1,000 askaris from the Security and Compliance sector, arguing that the sector was not among the transferred functions in the deed of transfer.

Sonko signed away four key roles to the National Government on February 25 under the deed of transfer – health, planning and development and transport, public works, utilities, and ancillary services.

But the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS), which is domiciled in the Executive Office of the President, says the officers and the functions it controls are inseparable as some of the roles require enforcement and compliance.

Badi’s team and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s camp have been embroiled in a bitter war over garbage mounds in different city estate.
