How To Register For NHIF Online And How To Pay Though MPESA

The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a governmental initiative aimed at initially helping civil servants have hospital cover. However, now, any Kenyan resident above the age of 18 years is eligible to register and make monthly contributions to the fund.

For the longest time, interested applicants had to find NHIF offices and make queues throughout the day to have their official NHIF membership cards and numbers.

You can register for the NHIF both online and offline through self-registration or by visiting the Huduma center. A Kenyan resident who has attained 18 years and earns more than 1,000 shillings a month and 12,000 shillings per year are eligible for NHIF membership.

1. Highly subsidized hospital bills. NHIF may cover some or your entire medical bill depending on the hospital and type of treatment. This helps you save a lot of money in the long run.
2. NHIF comes in handy especially when the medical treatment needed is unplanned and an emergency.
3. With an NHIF cover, your spouse and registered dependents also receive medical cover.

What you need for registration

1. A scanned copy of your national ID
2. A scanned copy of your spouse’s national ID and marriage certificate where applicable
3. For children over 6 months, a birth certificate is needed
4. Your employers NHIF code (if you are employed)
5. A colored passport photo. It is also necessary to attach passport photos of your spouse or dependents where applicable

For foreign residents

1. Scanned copy of your passport or alien certificate.
2. Scanned copy of your current passport photo.

How to register for NHIF online

1. Go to:  NHIF registration portal
2. Click Self Employed
3. Enter your National ID/Passport/Alien ID
4. Fill in all other form fields.
5. Attach a Scanned Copy of Your ID or passport.
6. Attach Passport Size Photo.
7. If married, attach your spouse’s Marriage Certificate.
8. Click to Confirm. Your application will be submitted if you filled all the details correctly

Paying for NHIF through Mpesa paybill

1. Choose Paybill option
2. Enter the NHIF Business no.200222
3. Enter the contributor’s national ID number as the account number
4. Enter amount
5. Enter your M-PESA pin and confirm the details.
