Passenger Flights From India Suspended For 14 Days

The last 24 hours brought 360,960 new cases for the world's largest single-day total, taking India's tally of infections to nearly 18 million.

It was also the deadliest day so far, with 3,293 fatalities carrying the toll to 201,187.

Passenger flights from India to Kenya have been suspended for 14 days pending review following a surge in Covid-19 cases ravaging India. The directive was announced by the CS for Health Mr. Mutahi Kagwe on Wednesday after meeting stakeholders.

India has been hit the hardest with the Covid-19 pandemic with at least 2000 people dying daily. On Wednesday, 3000 people died from the deadly virus with more than 300,000 new infections, currently the highest daily infections in the world.

Cremation centers in New Delhi and other cities have been overwhelmed with the number of dead bodies. Many have been forced to put up temporary cremation centers in the fields and roadsides to meet the ever-surging demand.

However, cargo flights between Kenya and India will continue. Kenyans and other visitors flying into Kenya from India within the 72 hours before the directive takes effect will have to be quarantined for 14 days at their own cost for at least 7,000 shillings per day.

Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, and the United States of America have offered to help India with supplies of vaccines, oxygen cylinders, ventilators, and foodstuffs. The country has since rolled out a mass vaccination for citizens.

Hospitals in India have been overwhelmed by the surging cases of Covid-19. Almost all the hospitals have run out of Oxygen. The majority of the hospitals in India are private hospitals which more than 70 percent of citizens cannot afford.
