The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has destroyed “illicit” goods worth 1 billion shillings after a series of raids conducted in Nairobi. The goods were destroyed at ECCL Facility in Stoni Athi, Kajiado County.

“This afternoon, KRA in collaboration with the multi-agency team against illicit trade destroyed illicit excisable products with a market value of Ksh1 billion at Stoni Athi, Kajiado County.

“The products seized from various traders in Nairobi and its environs were being sold in contravention of various regulations as provided for under the Excise Duty Act which could have led to the loss of taxes worth over Ksh400 million,” said KRA in a statement.

The goods included 379,760 bottles of alcoholic spirits, 60 drums of raw spirit, 35,615 bottles of beer, 11,000 bottles of wine, and 197,000 packets of cigarettes.

“This exercise reflects the passion and determination by the government to eradicate illicit trade within our borders and KRA’s commitment towards its mandate of facilitating legitimate trade in the country,” said the agency.

At the same time, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has suffered a blow in its pursuit of 787.87 million shillings in taxes from a local trader who operates a fuel station and provides transport services for the United Nations, after a tribunal said the demands were erroneous.

The Tax Appeals Tribunal (TAT) barred the KRA from demanding the money from Abdi Amin’s businesses and instead directed the taxman to conduct a fresh audit of the trader’s accounts.

The tribunal also directed KRA to resolve the irregularity on the use of Mr. Amin’s national ID number to register two Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) saying that the irregularities cast doubts on the proper tax records for the trader.
