Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has announced that it will only employ secondary School tutors, leaving behind a big batch of unemployed Certificate primary teachers.

This is part of the government scheme to employ 15,000 secondary School teachers. This means that the education service of 5000 teachers per year.

TCS will then deploy 5,000 teachers to secondary schools as the institutions are expected to face a bigger shortage. Some 3,500 interns will also be posted to secondary on a two-year contract.

The commission, however, says it has no plans to recruit primary school tutors, throwing into uncertainty the fate of thousands of unemployment P1 certificate holders.

This is in contradiction with an earlier statement in which TSC had announced that it will hire a total of 37,000 teachers this year, to curb the teacher shortage in the country and reduce the unemployed backlog.

With worrying reports of graduate P1 Teachers staying out of the TSC employment register for a period of up to 10 years, this will be a punch on the head for the already disillusioned men and women, and prospecting trainees in the field

It is not clear whether the move is coming out of budgetary concerns but will nevertheless be heartbreaking for the thousands of teachers who will have to wait for another full year to try their luck.

To qualify for the TSC recruitment of teachers, he or she must meet the basic minimum requirements that differ from one category to another.

TSC recruitment application form is available on the commission’s website. Interested candidates should submit their application forms online through the TSC portal. Here is the step-by-step guide on how to make the online application

  1. Visit the Teachers Service commissions online portal.
  2. Sign in to the portal, and you will see a link titled “active adverts for teachers”,
  3. The next page will be the e-recruitment portal that has a list of open vacancies.
  4. Scroll to your desired post and click on ‘actions’ on the far right.
  5. Once you get to the next page, you will see “View/ apply”. Here, you can view the details of the job then apply for the post
  6. Enter your surname, ID, and TSC numbers to proceed.
  7. Fill in the details that follow to complete the application.

It is important to note that you should not submit a hard copy of the same to the commission once you opt for an online application. Similarly, no application fee is demanded, and the already TSC-employed teachers should not apply again.
