A man in Spain has been jailed for 15 years after killing his mother and eating all the remains. Alberto Sánchez Gómez, 28, was arrested in 2019 after police found body parts around his mother’s home. He admitted having eaten her.

The court rejected Sánchez’s arguments that he was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time of the killing. He will now serve 15 years for murder and a further five months for the desecration of a corpse according to the records by the court.

The 28-year-old has also been ordered to pay his brother €60,000 ($73,000, £52,000) in compensation. The money will help in “consoling” the brother for the trauma he experienced following Alberto’s cannibal behavior.

Police arrived at the home in eastern Madrid in February 2019 after a friend raised concerns about the welfare of María Soledad Gómez, who was in her 60s.

During the trial, the court heard that Sánchez, then aged 26, had strangled his mother during a dispute.

South Africa Back To Lockdowns To Contain Covid-19

South Africa has returned to tighter restrictions on public gatherings and liquor sales as the country see a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday that the new infections threaten the health systems in several parts of the country and COVID-related hospital admissions have increased 59 percent over the past two weeks.

The nightly curfew has been extended by an hour from 10 pm to 4 am while religious gatherings indoors are limited to 50 people.

The number of people allowed to gather for social events has been limited to 50 people for indoor events and 100 people for outdoor events.

The retail sale of alcohol will only be permitted between 10 am and 6 pm local time from Monday through Thursday.

South Africa’s seven-day rolling average of daily new cases has nearly doubled over the past two weeks from 6.69 new cases per 100,000 people on May 31 to 12.71 on June 14, according to Johns Hopkins University.
