KEY POINTS

The government offered a petrol subsidy of Sh4.40 a liter in April and has in the past three months spent Sh13.22 on kerosene and Sh7.28 on diesel.

As Kenyans continue to struggle with high taxes, rise in the prices of major basic commodities, and with the latest increase in the price of cooking gas, a liter of petrol might go beyond 130 shillings starting Midnight if the government will not step in.

The Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is set to announce the new prices that will be in place for the next 30 days. The State is likely to withdraw the current subsidy in place, a move that will spark another outrage from Kenya.

The Business Daily says estimates from the Ministry of Energy show that the price of Super Petrol is set to increase by at least 3 shillings, leading to 130 shillings per liter, making it the highest price in Kenya’s history. Kenyans are in trouble.

The price of crude oil has been increasing globally. Since April, the government moved to offer subsidies to fuel suppliers to cushion Kenyans. It offered a petrol subsidy of Sh4.40 a liter in April and has in the past three months spent Sh13.22 on kerosene and Sh7.28 on diesel.

In the past three months, EPRA has retained the price of Diesel and Kerosene to cushion Kenyans against the rising cost of living that has, in turn, pushed the inflation rate up. It is estimated that in the next review, both Diesel and Kerosene will rise.

When the price of fuel goes up, common Kenyans are meant to carry the burden as the suppliers never make losses. This will see a rise in transport costs and a rise in the prices of commodities as manufacturers look for ways to cushion their businesses.

Kenyans have called on the government not to withdraw the current subsidies on fuel as it will hit hard on their already mutilated pockets.
