What To Watch From 5th To 8th In The Tokyo Olympics

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to the world’s biggest and most diverse celebration of sport, the Summer Olympic Games, which will run from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

SuperSport is the ultimate destination for coverage of the Olympic Games, with thousands of world-class athletes from around the world set to entertain for over two weeks of the incredible action from the Games of the XXXII Olympiad.

With such a huge variety of sport on offer from Tokyo throughout the Olympic Games, we have picked some of the key events for the period of 5 to 8 August 2021.

Thursday 5 August features Session 14 and 15 from the Athletics events – headlined by the Men’s 400m Final – as well as the Men’s Park Final from Skateboarding, where the first-ever Olympic champion in this event will be crowned. Boxing fans can see the Men’s Featherweight Gold Medal Match, while further glory will be up for grabs in the Men’s Hockey Gold Medal Match.

Friday 6 August features the Football Women’s Gold Medal Match early in the morning, followed by the Beach Volleyball Women’s Gold Medal Match, the Hockey Women’s Gold Medal Match, and the Women’s Marathon Final which gets underway late in the evening. The day also sees the Boxing Men’s Heavyweight Gold Medal Match and Session 17 of the Athletics, which will feature the Men’s 5000m final and the 4x100m Relay.

The 5000m race is set to be dominated by the world record at this distance, Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, though he will face stiff competition from the likes of Jakob Ingebrigsten of Norway and Ethiopia’s Getnet Wale. “I am in good form and have trained well for this event,” said Wale. “The field is very competitive and it will be down to who has the best tactics on the day.”

Saturday 7 August sees Gold Medal Matches for the Men’s Basketball, Men’s Beach Volleyball, and Men’s Football, as well as the start of the Men’s Marathon late in the evening. Interspersed through the day there is also the Women’s Flyweight Gold Medal Match in Boxing, as well as the most sought-after prize in Women’s Gymnastics, the Individual All-Around Final. Athletics will also hold its final session at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, with the Men’s 1500m and 4x400m Relay Finals, as well as the Women’s 10,000m, 4x400m Relay, and High Jump Finals.

Kenya’s Hellen Obiri is set to be a major contender in the 10,000m, as she looks to hold off the challenge posed by Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey. “Hassan and Gidey are very good athletes but for me, I have nothing to worry about since this is a championship, it is all about experience and shape. My target is also to attain a new personal best in the race,” said Obiri.

Tokyo 2020’s final day of action arrives on Sunday 8 August, with the Basketball Women’s Gold Medal Match, Boxing Men’s Lightweight Gold Medal Match, and Water Polo Men’s Gold Medal Match taking center stage before the Olympic Games wraps up with the Closing Ceremony.
