KEY POINTS

Coming at a time many Nairobians have been walking around sneezing and blowing their noses like nobody's business, many will indeed be netted.

Have you been walking around the streets of Nairobi without a handkerchief? Well, you better start walking around with one because you never when you will blow your nose, and if you do without one, you will be bundled into that dirty Kanjo car.

Nairobi City County has introduced new rules that the MCAs say will help to keep the city cleaner than ever before. Among the rules, those who will be found blowing their nose without a handkerchief will immediately be arrested and prosecuted.

The new regulations are contained in the Nairobi City County Public Nuisance Bill, 2021 that has been signed into law by Acting Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu.

Coming at a time many Nairobians have been walking around sneezing and blowing their noses like nobody’s business, many will indeed be netted.

Another section of human beings who will be netted are those who have a habit of ignoring the “usikojoe hapa” sign. This is because those caught urinating in undesignated spaces, spitting on the streets, as well as sleeping in kitchens or food stores will be arrested.

At the same time, the same new law prohibits the discharge of dirty water, sewer, or effluent into streets or water channels, discharge of oils into roads or water channels, and obstruction of roads or streets. The county says it will arrest all of them.

It also prohibits residents from allowing trees and hedges in their homes or places of work to obstruct streets or footpaths, further criminalizing riding motorcycles or driving on footpaths, playing loud music, and smoking in undesignated places.

Whether the law will help keep Nairobi clean or just another avenue for officials within the county to become experts in collecting bribes, only time will tell.
