European 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, Matchday 9 Preview

The top matches for Thursday come from Group B, where Sweden will look to continue their stranglehold on the top spot with a win away to Georgia in an early-evening kick-off, while rivals Spain must keep pace with a victory away to Greece.

“We are heading into a decisive time for the World Cup qualifiers and we need to maintain focus,” said Spain manager Luis Enrique. “We must be at our best in November to ensure that we gain an automatic qualification and don’t have to go through the playoffs.”

Another key clash sees Portugal looking to reclaim the top spot in Group A when they face the Republic of Ireland away from home. The Navigators are looking to oust Serbia (who have played a game more) in the race for automatic qualification to Qatar 2022.

Portugal boss Fernando recently defended the age of his squad and insists this issue will not have an impact on their World Cup ambitions: “Players do not have to stop playing for the national team because they are of more or less age, quality is what counts,” said Santos.

“Fortunately, we have a lot of 30-year-old or 31-year-old players able to get here and play and the players have shown that [quality].”

Thursday also sees Russia at home to Cyprus in an early kick-off, Germany will welcome minnows Liechtenstein, Iceland face a tough game away to Romania, and Croatia have a must-win clash at Malta.
