The Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police will take part in hunting down those who spread fake news and social media bullies

The Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police will take part in hunting down those who spread fake news and social media bullies according to the newly-formed  National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee.

According to the Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i, fake news and propaganda have increased as the country approaches the general elections, warning Kenyans that stern action will be taken against the perpetrators.

“We shall start with the Kenyan who acted like the CS Matiang’i and misled people that on Thursday will be a public holiday to celebrate Diwali. Such people will have to face the law,” Dr. Matiang’i warned.

The CS was referring to a fake notice that was doing rounds on social media saying that the CS had declared Diwali a national holiday. Although many were doing it for fun, it appears the move will land them in court and maybe jail.

The newly formed committee consists of representatives from the Principal Secretary for State Department of Interior and Citizen Services, the Principal Secretary for State Department of ICT and Innovation, the Attorney- General, the Chief of Kenya Defense Forces, the Inspector- General of National Police Service, Director- General of the National Intelligence Service, Director-General of the Communications Authority of Kenya, Director of Public Prosecution, Governor of Central Bank of Kenya and Director of the Secretariat.
