KEY POINTS

Some governors including Alfred Mutua of Machakos County, Makueni’s Kivutha Kibwana, and Murang'a’s Mwangi Wa Iria have declared their quest for the presidency

With the political temperatures heightened across the nation in preparation for the 2022 general election, politics remain a matter of concern in present-day Kenya.

There is one common nightmare for the twenty-two Governors who are serving their second and last terms – What next after 2022?

According to the Constitution, the county chiefs cannot seek re-election after two terms.

Well, some governors including Alfred Mutua of Machakos County, Makueni’s Kivutha Kibwana, and Murang’a’s Mwangi Wa Iria have declared their quest for the presidency.

The likes of Governors Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), and Cornel Rasanga (Siaya) have hinted they could vie for MP positions when their terms expire.

It’s however, clear that most second-term governors exiting office are likely to be major campaigners for presidential candidates as they also fight for their own political future.

What will they be up to just in case they don’t get a safe landing prior to the 2022 elections? Some of these governors are too young to even think of exiting the political scene.
