The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced its return on Kenyan highways. The Authority has already started crackdowns along the busy Thika Superhighway. Those drivers who had gotten comfortable are in for a rude shock.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had ordered NTSA out of Kenyan highways after they were accused of massive corruption and an increase in accidents despite them being on the road. Motorists had enjoyed “peace” since then and their cash has remained intact.

“We shall enhance crackdowns as we head to the festive season. We know the highway has several black spots, and we need our drivers to be keen when driving on the road,” said Kendi Mutuma, Central Region NTSA Coordinator.

At the same time, PSV drivers who will be found to have tempered with speed governors will be arrested and prosecuted. This announcement will see a spike in the sale of speed governors because, obviously, most drivers disabled them.

The authority plans to install rail guards at the various crossing points proved to be black spots. Schools have been advised to hire marshalls who will ensure the learners use footbridges while crossing the highway because of the risks involved.
