Six Matches Lined Up For The World Cup Qualifiers This Monday

The top action from Monday sees Northern Ireland host Italy in Belfast for a key Group C clash, with the hosts perhaps having the chance to deny the Azzurri a direct path to the 2022 World Cup. NI coach Ian Baraclough believes his young team is hungry to make a major statement.

“We are on a new cycle now, with a younger element,” Barraclough explained. “For the Euros, I was probably working with [former coach] Michael’s [O’Neill] team. The pool of the players is greater now, there is more energy and I think the senior players welcome that.

“With the senior players nurturing these youngsters, there is a good blend. People thought it would be the end of an era. They wondered what we were going to do for the next 10 years. Hopefully, people now see that this does not necessarily have to be the case.”

Switzerland will tackle Bulgaria in Lucerne in the other Group C game, while two other British teams will wrap up their qualification campaigns: England will be away to San Marino and looking to seal the top spot in Group I, while Scotland’s Group F campaign will end with a clash against Denmark at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

The Scots will be looking to ensure they are one of the best runners-up to give them a better draw for the playoffs, though getting the better of the Danish Dynamite will be no easy task. Elsewhere, Poland will back themselves to beat Hungary at home and Israel should get the better of the Faroe Islands in Netanya.
