The World Cup Qualifiers: What To Expect On 16 November 2021

Europe’s group stage wraps up on Tuesday and all eyes will be on Group G’s key duo of matches, which see Montenegro hosting Turkey in Podgorica and Norway visiting the Netherlands at De Kuip in Rotterdam.

Norway is hoping to secure the first qualification for the World Cup since 1998, though they will have to do so without star striker Erling Haalan, who has been ruled out due to a hip injury. “It goes without saying that this was not according to plan,” said Norway coach Stale Solbakken. “But he was not with [us] last time either [against Turkey 1-1 and Montenegro 2-0]. Then we survived. Then we’ll see if we can do it this time.”

Turkey, meanwhile, could still steal into second place and put themselves in the playoffs at one of the Netherlands or Norway’s expenses, with coach Stefan Kuntz hoping to keep alive their hopes of a spot at Qatar 2022.

“We must fight until the final whistle and then see where we are. It will also depend on other results. We must ensure we get the wins against Gibraltar and Montenegro, then we put ourselves in the best position possible,” said the German tactician.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, France will be a way to Finland in Helsinki, the Czech Republic host Estonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina will look to upset Ukraine, and Wales have a key clash at home to Belgium in which their potential place in the playoffs will be decided.

“Second spot is still on,” said Wales coach Robert Page. “It’s in our hands and we need to make the most of this opportunity.”
