KRA Wants To Change Name To Kenya Revenue Service

Kenya Revenue Service from the Kenya Revenue Authority. Does it even make sense? Does it even sound right? And how is the change of name going to improve the services at the taxman’s office? Do you support the transition of KRA to KRS?

In case you are wondering about the rant, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wants to change its name to Kenya Revenue Service (KRS). Why? Because they think that the term “Authority” does not sit well with you, the taxpayer. Is this true?

“The term “Authority” sometimes has a connotation of command and commanding is not the real role of KRA. We are the servants of the taxpayers; we are giving taxpayers services,” KRA said as if they are just realizing that term now.

Many Kenyans are against the change of name. “We are used to KRA. It is like a tradition. Changing it is like doing away with this tradition.” Said one user. “But how will the change of name change anything in terms of service delivery?” asked another online user.

But KRA says, “Our goal is to perfect service delivery to the taxpayers and build relations founded on trust in order to optimize revenue collection without necessarily recommending more taxes.” How the name change will help with this remains a riddle.

According to KRA, “The other focus point is to ensure that we have a tax regime that is good for the economy. KRA has geared up towards tax base expansion as a tool for establishing a stable equilibrium in the taxation equation.”
