KEY POINTS

UFC 269 will see two titles on the line: the lightweight championship in the main event, as well as the women’s bantamweight championship in the co-main.

SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing Ultimate Fighting Championship action as UFC 269 takes center stage at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the morning of Sunday 12 December 2021.

UFC 269 will see two titles on the line: the lightweight championship in the main event, as well as the women’s bantamweight championship in the co-main.

Charles Oliveira and Dustin Poirier will be the headline bout. Oliveira (31-8, 1NC) will be making the first defense of the lightweight title, having claimed the belt (which was vacated by the retirement of the unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov) when he defeated Michael Chandler via second-round TKO at UFC 262 earlier this year.

The 32-year-old Brazilian has put together a nine-fight win streak (his last was against Paul Felder in late 2017) and has fired back at criticism from fellow lightweights Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler (who both believe Poirier will emerge victorious at UFC 269).

“Michael Chandler got here, was signed by the UFC to fight for the belt and had his opportunity,” Oliveira explained.  “He landed a good hand, had the opportunity to knock me out and win the fight but couldn’t. I went there and knocked him out.

“Justin Gaethje had the opportunity to fight for the belt against Khabib and you all saw what happened, I don’t need to say what happened. The ugliest fight I’ve ever seen in my life, he died, so I don’t have anything to say.”

He added, “Charles Oliveira will be fighting Dustin Poirier and if god wants me to win and continue with this belt, these guys have to win, they have to fight. If they fight and win, they can come.”

Poirier (28-6, 1NC), a former interim lightweight champion who was beaten for the undisputed belt by Nurmagomedov in 2019, has since defeated Dan Hooker and Conor McGregor (twice in a row) to establish himself as the number one contender. The 32-year-old American will be hoping to claim the championship outright for the first time in his career.

The co-main sees women’s MMA legend Amanda Nunes put her bantamweight championship on the line against Julianna Pena. Nunes (21-4) has won her last 12 fights to be undefeated since 2014 and is the holder of both the bantamweight and featherweight crowns.

Pena (10-4) has had mixed results in recent years (she is 2-2 in her last four fights) but comes into the clash on the back of a submission win over Sara McMann in early 2021. The 32-year-old American has explained her dedication to this match (which was postponed from its original slot for UFC 265): “I have been making this fight my top priority. I have been living in the gym,” explained Pena.

“My house is launching pad – I literally just go there, change clothes, take a shower and go to the next one. My kid has been taking all the sacrifices as I have; she’s been living in her car seat.

The main card opens with the flamboyant Sean O’Malley taking on Raulian Paiva in a bantamweight bout, followed by Kai Kara-France v Cody Garbrandt in the flyweight category, before welterweights Geoff Neal and Santiago Ponzinibbio battle in a high-class match.
