Los Nervionenses very much have an identity and style of playing under manager Julen Lopetegui, and it has seen them establish themselves as outsiders for the title (and likely top-four finishers).

Barcelona, by contrast, is in transition under manager Xavi Hernandez, but there are promising signs that the Blaugrana will play some fine football under the guidance of their former legendary midfielder.

“I think we’re on the right path, but we need to win,” Xavi explained. “I don’t think what is missing are goals. What we’re missing is to be more dare upfront. We are living in a moment of urgency. We can’t afford to lose anymore, we have to win every game.”

Another key clash in this final burst of La Liga action for 2021 sees Athletic Bilbao welcome Real Madrid to San Mames Barria. The Basque club would love to claim the scalp of Los Blancos, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side have shown great consistency in recent weeks and will be determined to head to the winter break on the back of a good result.

“It will be a difficult game to finish off this part of the season,” admitted Athletic coach Marcelino Garcia Toral. “We know the great quality of our opponents. However, we must focus on the task at hand and play to the best of our abilities. I can ask no more of our players.”

Champions Atletico Madrid will also be in action, as they head to Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes to take on Granada, while Villarreal will welcome Deportivo Alaves to Estadio de la Ceramica. The Yellow Submarine have struggled to score goals this season and will be hoping that the floodgates open against the Babazorros.

“This side is maturing, but we are lacking results and we need to take that next step and continue growing,” said Villarreal manager Unai Emery. “I want to be proud and congratulate my boys, but we need to take the next step to see these results out.”
