Inflation Drives Apple Prices to Kshs. 262.20/kg in Nairobi

With the current ongoing shake in the commodity prices in the country, fruit farming has also been greatly affected by the rapidly increasing inflation rates, inadequate rainfall, and the war of the European nations that has affected the global market. Most Fruit prices have had an upward trend across the country. Here is a look at how the costs of apples, bananas, and oranges are running across the country.

  1. Apples

Apples are trading highest in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Isiolo at 262.20 shillings per kilogram while selling lowest in Eldoret at 100 shillings per kilogram.

In Nakuru, a kilogram of apple fruits is going for 176.67 shillings per kilogram and 150 shillings per kilogram in Kakamega.

Market prices for Kenya apples have varied across the years. One kilo of apples was going for 110.98 shillings in 2017 and 89.24 shillings in 2018.  In 2019 the export price changed to 94.96 per kilo, a drop of 7.067 percent.

  1. Bananas

On average, the market prices of bananas have gone down. Before 2019, one kilo of bananas went for 99.54 shillings in 2017 and 144.16 shillings in 2018. In 2019 the export price changed to 191.06 shillings per kilo, by 31.944 percent.

In 2022, a kilo of banana fruit sells highest in Eldoret at 250 shillings and lowest in Nakuru and Kitale at 72.50 shillings and 72 shillings, respectively.

The same measure of the commodity is trading at 104.92 shillings in Nairobi and Kisumu and 150 shillings in Kakamega county.

The total values in export for bananas in Kenya were 3,432.30 shillings, 2,745.84 shillings, and 2,402.61 shillings for the years 2017, 2018, and 2019 respectively.

  1. Oranges

Across the different counties, a kilo of oranges goes for 197.55 shillings in Nairobi and Kisumu, which is the highest, and 80 shillings in Naivasha, coming as the lowest amount.

Those in Kakamega and Kitale pay 100 and 195 shillings respectively for a kilo of oranges.

In 2017, a kilo of oranges was going for 80.09 shillings and 66.36 shillings in 2018. The export price changed to 84.66 per kilo, by 26.249 percent.

The total values in export for oranges were 9,610.44, 25,513.43, 12,127.46, 12,013.05 shillings for the years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
