KEY TAKEAWAYS

The 2019 census showed that about 75 percent of Kenya's population is made up of people below the age of 35. This means that Kenya is a youthful nation hence more pressure on the creation of jobs.

Degree holders will not be allowed to take part in the police recruitment exercise that kicks off today, Thursday 24, according to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS). Only those who scored D+ in their KCSE will be allowed to be selected as Constables.

“In the adverts placed in various media platforms, we have indicated that we are recruiting police constables with minimum qualifications of D+ in their KSCE exam and it remains such,” NPSC official John Ole Moyaki said on Monday.

According to Ole Moyaki, the reason degree holders will not be picked in this exercise is to “avoid labor issues.” The Commission added that it is avoiding those with degrees because it does not want a repeat of disputes witnessed previously with graduate officers over salaries.

“There is a particular group for the advertised positions. We are advising those with degrees to wait for other positions to avoid labor issues. We are not discouraging graduates from joining the police service, but there are better opportunities and higher job groups that would suit them, apart from the police,” he said.

Police recruitments in Kenya have in the past been attracting a high number of candidates who want to try their luck after years of looking for jobs in various fields. Among those who always turn up are degree holders but some, upon joining, often raise issues about their salaries.

Kenya’s unemployment rate has always been a subject of discussion. Some agencies such as the National Employment Authority have put the numbers at 43.5 percent. The numbers were, however, made public verbally and no data exists to show that.
