Heavy Traffic Expected in Nairobi Ahead of Kibaki’s Funeral Progression

The National Police service on Thursday announced that traffic along some sections of the roads within Nairobi will be disrupted due to the state funeral of the late former president Mwai Kibaki which will take place at the Nyayo National stadium.

The procession to Nyayo stadium, which the Kenya Defense Forces will lead, will affect traffic on some parts of Kenyatta Avenue, Uhuru Highway, and Aerodrome Road.

Motorists from Mombasa road heading towards the CBD and Westlands will use the Southern Bypass or Likoni, Enterprise, and Lusaka roads to avoid inconveniences on Uhuru Highway.

The National police service noted that many people and vehicles will be expected at Nyayo national Stadium for the function; therefore, parking within the Nyayo Stadium premises will only be allowed for vehicles with parking access stickers.

Preparations for the final mass at the Othaya Approved School, where the funeral service will be held – and the burial place at his home – are in top gear, with the military taking charge of all the work. Several government parastatals, including Kenya Power and Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), have been deployed to give the town a makeover. The Nyeri County Fire department has also been deployed to assist with cleaning the home, which remains cordoned off to the public.

With the former president being accorded a state funeral, the central government is in charge of all arrangements, with two committees tasked with the job.
