TSC Receives 294.7 Billion Shillings To Hire 5000 More Teachers

With an allocation of 544.4 billion shillings, the Ministry of Education received the lion’s share of the 2022/2023 budget read by Treasury CS Ukur Yatani on Thursday, April 7, 2022. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) received 294.7 billion shillings to hire new teachers.

Meanwhile, teacher training under the CBC has also received a massive boost with an allocation of 1.2 billion shillings. Early this week, TSC announced in a circular that it would begin training Junior Secondary School Teachers from April 25 to May 20, 2022.

According to Dr. Macharia, the training would focus on the CBC and Competency-based assessments. It will use the cascade method of training, which requires Masters trainers to train Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) and then provide professional support during face-to-face teacher training across the counties and sub-counties.

Treasury CS Ukur Yatani stated that a total of 64.4 billion shillings would be allocated to free day secondary school education and 12 billion shillings for free day primary school education.

The 64.4 billion shillings For Free day Secondary education includes EduAfya, a comprehensive medical insurance cover for high school students under the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).

He further noted that 5 billion shillings would be used to waive exams for Grade Six, Class eight, and Form Four students while 7.96 billion shillings to fund the school feeding program.

Four billion shillings will go toward the government’s plan to build more classrooms, while another 6.8 billion shillings toward the Kenya Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project.

A further 310 billion shillings were allocated to the laptop project as part of the Digital Literacy Program and integrating information and communication technology in secondary schools.

For TVET student capitation,  the Treasury allocated a sum of 5.2 billion shillings to adequately cater to the growing number of students enrolling in the institutions.

The education sector funds, according to CS, have been increased to improve outcomes and facilitate the realization of their full potential, and effectively contribute to the development of the country.
