Moja Expressway Company, which will operate and maintain the road for the next 27 years, said motorists could pay via cash at the toll booths or tap and go using a Manual Toll Card.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The reason one is required to bring a copy of their logbook is to make sure that the car matches with On-Board Unit (OBU), and for safety enhancement.
Motorists who intend to use the Nairobi Expressway will be required to present a copy of the logbook, a copy of the National Identity card, or other forms of identification to register.
According to Jeanne May Ongiyo, the Public Relations and Communication Manager at Moja Expressway, the reason one is required to bring a copy of their logbook is to make sure that the car matches with On-Board Unit (OBU), and for safety enhancement.
“Once the OBU is installed, it cannot be transferred to another vehicle, hence the need for the logbook while registering,” Onginyo said.
Moja Expressway Company, which will operate and maintain the road for the next 27 years, said motorists could pay via cash at the toll booths or tap and go using a Manual Toll Card.
“At the moment we do not have a mobile phone type of payment but we will revisit it later. Those paying cash do not need to register. Only those who want to install the OBU are required to register,”
Companies will be required to present a copy of the certificate of incorporation, company KRA PIN certificate, contact person’s ID card, vehicle logbook, and a letter introducing the contact person for the service.
Motorists will require a special toll payment card to use the route. They are then urged to physically visit Nairobi Expressway Plaza Service Centre on Mombasa road to register with Moja Expressway. At the service Centre, you will be required to prove ownership of the vehicle and also subscribe to the mode of payment that you will be using to make payments to use the Expressway.
How to apply for a toll Payment card

- Fill in the subscriber registration form
- Present your ID/Passport and Logbook
- Purchase toll Point and activate your card.

Those applying for the Electronic Toll collection service will be issued with an On-Board Unit (OBU), a device to be installed on their vehicle and activated. Next, they will purchase toll points of a minimum of 2,000 shillings with a validity of one year.
The dual carriageway has 11 interchanges at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.
Last month, the government gazetted price charges for using the expressway once the project is opened for public use.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said once the road is completed, motorists will be expected to pay between 100 shillings and 1,550 shillings in toll charges, depending on the size of the vehicle and the distance covered.
Three-wheelers commonly known as Tuk Tuks, pedestrians, handcarts, skaters, scooters, bicycles, carts, as well as boda boda operations will not be allowed on the road.
