KEY TAKEAWAYS

Over the last five years, the country has experienced extreme weather conditions that have resulted in a change in weather patterns, including delayed rainfalls and prolonged drought.

The Meteorological department has warned that the country will likely experience some bad weather conditions in the next five days.

The weatherman noted that depending on the region, the weather patterns will vary from strong winds to large waves, which had already started on 2nd June 2022.

Some counties expected to be hit hard by this include Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Meru, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

Residents from these areas have been asked to remain on the lookout to avoid the crisis that might come with the conditions.

“Residents in all the areas mentioned above are advised to look for potential gale (very strong winds) and huge waves over the Indian Ocean. Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damage.

“Those in the areas of concern should be on high alert. Everyone is urged to continue listening to local media as updates will be provided if conditions change significantly. The MET department warned that further advisories might be issued as the weather events evolve” the MET department warned.

Delayed Rains and how it has affected the country

While the overall environment has not been good for business due to global factors, local factors such as delayed rains have added to the injury.

The delayed rains have already affected the planting season for various crops such as maize and barely is also biting over 3.5 million people, their livelihoods, and wildlife following the failure of the short and long rainy seasons in 2021.

The Northern part, specifically Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Samburu, Baringo, Turkana, and Mandera, had been hit hard by the drought, and the people even went ahead to call for humanitarian support.

The crisis that has since caused hunger has also led to other negative impacts such as hiked food prices, school dropouts, early marriages, malnutrition, gender-based conflict, and mental health since 2021.

It’s right to say the coming of the rains at the moment is a ray of hope for the millions of Kenyans, but will there be a quick recovery to ensure things are back to normal?

With the adverse weather conditions expected now, let us be careful and watch out for any possible crisis.
