KEY TAKEAWAYS

Teachers have demanded a 60 percent salary raise from the TSC immediately. If a push by the teachers’ union is approved, the lowest paid teacher could get a raise of 14,550 shillings, increasing their salary to 38,800 shillings

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) wants the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, to review the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to effect a 60 percent salary increase for the 300,000-odd teachers.

Teachers have demanded a 60 percent salary raise from the TSC immediately. If a push by the teachers’ union is approved, the lowest paid teacher could get a raise of 14,550 shillings, increasing their salary to 38,800 shillings.

KNUT secretary general Collins Oyuu said the union has already presented its proposal to TSC requesting for review for the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement, CBA.

“It is true that we signed a CBA that extended maternity leave days for our female teachers and introduced paternity leave for male teachers. But with the current economic challenges, teachers need money benefits and hence, a demand for salary increment” Collins Oyuu said.

Presently, teachers at Job Group B1 have a basic salary of 24,250 shillings. If the push gets TSC’s nod, the highest paid teachers, who fall under Job Group D5 will get a raise of about 89,016 shillings. This could push the teachers’ new salary to 237,376 shillings up from the present 148,360 shillings

In addition to these, KNUT also wants the government to cater for their refresher training courses to cushion teachers from the high cost of living. The union demands that Members of Parliament approve 4.5 billion shillings to foot the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) refresher courses for teachers.

The KNUT also wants a review of promotion criteria to benefit tutors who have obtained higher qualifications. The demands emerged after Knut held a three-day consultative meeting with the TSC in Naivasha

“Our position as KNUT was and continues to be that promotion policy be reviewed to accommodate, motivate and encourage teachers with higher academic qualifications so that their effort doesn’t go to waste,” said Collins Oyuu, Knut secretary general.
