A 70 kg bag of layers mash is currently retailing at 4,500 shillings from 3,800 shillings in April. Chick mash is at the same time going for 4,940 shillings from 4,200 shillings. Similarly, dairy meal prices have also increased to 2,800 shillings from 2,500 shillings.

A section of animal feed manufacturers who imported a large volume of yellow maize last month are now staring at losses occasioned by cheap local white maize which has triggered low demand for the imported yellow maize.

A 90-kilogram bag of imported yellow maize is selling at 5,600 shillings against the 5,300 shillings that white maize is selling locally.

“Millers who imported yellow maize are now stuck with it because it’s expensive to sell it locally when compared with available white maize at the market,” Joseph Karuri, chairperson Association of Kenya Feed Manufacturers said.

The importation of yellow maize in July was meant to reduce the price of animal feeds and reduce pressure on white maize. At the time of importation, the price of white maize had hit a high of 6,000 shillings.

The price of the grain has gone down to around 5,300 shillings following a good supply from farmers who have finalized harvesting.

“We’re currently receiving maize from Narok, Bomet, and other parts of South Rift. The harvest of the crop in Nyanza and former Western Province has boosted our operations,” Kipng’etich Mutai, chairman of the Grain Belt Millers Association said.

The prices of white maize are likely to go down further subjecting yellow maize importers to massive losses given the cost of importation. The delays in importing yellow maize have seen the price of feeds remain at historic levels, piling pressure on the cost of animal products.

The situation has worsened local prices pushing farmers to seek other alternative feeds to tame losses. The animal feed industry uses about 1.5 million metric tonnes of both white and yellow maize.
