Diani Reopens For Direct Flights Ahead Of December Festivities

BY Jane Muia · November 2, 2022 03:11 pm

Visitors to the south coast can now fly directly to the Diani airport as rehabilitation work at the airport’s runway is complete. This comes as a boost to the tourism sector at a time when the December festivities are just around the corner.

Works on the airport’s runway (formerly Ukunda Airstrip) commenced on October 12 and was supposed to be completed in 14 days but was extended to November 2. Flights have been ending at the Moi International Airport (Mombasa) with passengers using buses and ferries to complete their journey.

While rehabilitation of the rest of the facility is ongoing, airlines can now resume direct flights to Diani, a move that has been welcomed by tourism stakeholders. Diani is one of the most prominent tourist resort areas in Kenya. Diani beach has restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, and several shopping centers.

‘’Lately, you’ve been landing in Mombasa and getting on the ferry that you’ve always wanted to avoid. Why lie, it’s a long drive as opposed to landing in Diani before you blink you are sipping your welcome drink at your chosen resort…Well from tomorrow 02/11/2022 (today) henceforth it’s back to business as usual which means your favorite airline will be back to land in Diani. veteran hotelier and Diani Hospitality Owners Association chairman, Mohammed Hersi, tweeted.

Diani airport is one of the fastest growing in terms of domestic flights after Wilson airport. It is served by Jambojet, AirKenya, Safari Link, and Fly 540 among other private charters. With the expansion, hoteliers are expected to make a kill in the December festivities, coming as a boon to the entire tourism sector.

This is likely to positively impact the sector’s earnings by the end of the year. In the eight months to August, the tourism sector earnings hit 167 billion shillings from the 83 billion shillings recorded in a similar period last year.  This was helped by an increase in the number of international arrivals, which also increased 91.3 percent to 924,812 from 883,246 last year.

The highest number of visitors toured the country for holidays, with the total number standing at 313,466. The United States was the top market for Kenyan tourism followed by Uganda and the UK. The ministry now projects an increase in the number of total arrivals this year to 1.4 million, an increase from the 870,467 recorded at the end of December last year when the country was still battling the effects of the covid 19 pandemic.
