KEY TAKEAWAYS

Subsidy on the farm input saw a 50kg bag of DAP retail at 2,800 shillings down from 6,000 shillings. Urea dropped to 2,700 shillings, CAN 1,950, NPK 3,000, MOP 2500, and Sulphate Ammonia to 2,500 shillings, from 6,500, 3,900 and 4,900, 3,800, and 3,800 shillings, respectively.

The port of Mombasa expects to receive 3 consignments of fertilizer in the next 14 days as of Monday 17 January 2023.

While HPC Sunrise is set to arrive on Jan 22, 2023, Nord Dubai and Bulk Traders will be arriving on Jan 25, 2023.

The bulk arrival of the farm input follows president Ruto’s promise that farmers would from February this year start receiving fertilizer for planting in the next season.

“For the season that is in demand which starts in February, we have now ordered six million sacks of fertilizer, we will probably increase it to eight or seven million according to the research we are currently doing to register farmers,” he said.

While wiping out subsidies on fuel and maize flour, the Head of state retained the fertilizer subsidy seeking to bring down the cost of production.

Agriculture PS Harry Kimutai earlier said the government is working hard to roll out various programs that will ensure farmers have access to fertilizer and tame the ever-escalating cost of the farm input.

‘’Our Constitution gives us the mandate to ensure every Kenyan is free from hunger and has adequate food of acceptable quality. To feed our people, we need to put in place strategies that will ensure that we can feed our people sustainably and the factors of production are optimally within the reach of our producers,’’ he said.

The government has put in place various measures including the development of the national soil fertility management policy that will regulate and provide guidelines on how farmers use fertilizer to boost the country’s food security.

Besides sensitizing farmers on the use of fertilizer, the government is planning to introduce the e-voucher system to ensure farmers access fertilizer without having to rely on physical interaction.

The government is also keen on developing more interventions to support farmers in the country by providing appropriate and credible information on the Ministry of Agriculture’s official website.
