KEY POINTS

Each year about 295 000 women die during pregnancy, or childbirth globally. WHO notes that 94 percent of these deaths occur in low and lower-middle-income countries.

Parenthood is a dream that many, if not all, women dream of. However, some of these dreams are cut short just a few hours to winning the title – of a mother.

A 2019 report by the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year about 295 000 women die during pregnancy, or childbirth globally. WHO notes that 94 percent of these deaths occur in low and lower-middle-income countries.

With Kenya lying under the lower middle-income countries category, pregnancy-related complications constitute the principal cause of mortality among women, translating to 362 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births, according to a 2020 qualitative study by Banke-Thomas, Maua, Madaj, Ameh, & Broek on Perspectives of stakeholders on emergency obstetric care training in Kenya.

Another Study by the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) estimates that 6,300 women die annually during pregnancy and childbirth in Kenya. Various factors contribute to these deaths, from negligence in health centers, lack of appropriate care during pregnancy, or lack of skilled health attendants.
