“As a result, the purchase of prepaid tokens and checking of token details via *977# and myPower App will be unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
This comes days after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) reviewed electricity price rates. EPRA Director General Daniel Bargoria on Friday said electricity prices will, as of April 1, 2023, increase by up to 63 percent.
Kenya Power had applied for an increase in electricity tariff charges. The move will see KPLC increase the power tariff to KSh16.3/kWh for customers using 30 units and above and KSh12/kWh for those using less than 30 units.
The reviewed tariffs show that Kenyans consume below 30 kilowatts(kWh)) per month will have their electricity bills go up by 22.2 percent. The Electricity Consumers Association of Kenya (ECSK) has filed a petition challenging the implementation of the new tariffs.
The petitioners are Ngaruiya Gitau, Isaac Ndereva, Waweru Gituke, and the Electricity Consumers Society of Kenya. On Thursday, the High court certified the case as urgent.
According to Kenya Power, the new tariffs will grant the distributor net earnings of Ksh184.9 billion in the Financial Year 2023/24.
