Most rivers that feed Nairobi with water have dried up and water from the main reservoir has greatly dropped with the possibility of the residents of Nairobi facing more water shortages in the days to come.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Areas affected include Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Athi River Export Processing Zone (EPZ), Coca-Cola, Mukuru, Imara Daima, estates along North Airport Road and Embakasi village and Tassia estate

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage company has announced that a section of Nairobi residents will go without a drop of water for at least two days starting this Thursday.

The shortage, according to the city water body, will be a result of the relocation of water pipes along the Nairobi Expressway. The pipes will take at least two days to be relocated.

“The shutdown will pave way for the interconnection of relocated pipeline to the old pipeline at the junction of North Airport/Eastern Bypass Road and Mombasa Road,” said the company in a statement.

Areas affected include Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), Athi River Export Processing Zone (EPZ), Coca-Cola, Mukuru, Imara Daima, estates along North Airport Road and Embakasi village and Tassia estate.

Others are General Service Unit and Administration Police training colleges and Nairobi Inland Container depot. Industries along Masai road and adjacent areas will also be affected.

“We appeal to our customers for their indulgence and for them to use the available water sparingly for the process might sometimes take longer than expected,” added the statement.

The announcement by the company comes even as some of the residents within the city have been experiencing massive water rationing and shortage due to the ongoing hot season.

Most rivers that feed Nairobi with water have dried up and water from the main reservoir has greatly dropped with the possibility of the residents of Nairobi facing more water shortages in the days to come.

Currently, the country is going through one of the worst dry seasons that has affected the whole country. At least 37 counties are facing an acute drought with at least 5 million people being without food.

The government has announced some drought mitigation measures although the victims of the ongoing drought claim such measures never reach them on the ground.
